Very interesting. But my critique of architecture though is how it seems to me to be somewhat deterministic--as if the design of the built environment can somewhat influence human behaviour. I guess if one works from this assumption, then this forecloses the agency of the inhabitants in actually contesting the inscribed meanings of the site. Take the void deck, for example--it's not designated as an area to play soccer in, but children do it all the time--and this for me is demonstrative of the human capacity for resisting the codification of spaces.

I guess my real question is: should architecture be prescriptive? Will the design of 'communal areas' necessary lead to greater social intermingling? Does the design of 'private spaces' necessarily ensure immunity from surveillance? And um, what to make of the Chinoiserie pavilions in HDB gardenscapes?
